Sydney Basketball Academy

Head Coach - Sami Tsegay

Coach Sami specialises in tailored training programs and individual workouts structured to the athletes skill level, age and player development.

Currently Sami is the Head Coach of Marrickville Spirit Under 18’s Men’s Representative Team (Div 1), UNSW Men’s Team Head Coach, Head Coach/Trainer AUSA Tour & Academy Teams 2023/2024 (also previously Head Coach for U16 Sydney Comets Gold) and multiple teams for both Trinity Grammar School and Sydney Boys High School. 
Most recently Coach Sami led Marrickville Spirit U18 Boys Div 1 Representative Team to 2nd place for NSW Metro.

Coach has spent twenty years within Australian basketball at every level and with this experience and passion for the game he has accumulated vast knowledge of not just the game Itself but also how to facilitate successful player and skill development.

Sami is dedicated to his community and making difference spending over 5 years working as a Team Leader in Children’s Services for the City of Sydney Council and as a Sports & Recreation Officer before dedicating himself to full time coaching and mentoring Sydney’s young basketball players.

Ideal for representative players, individuals looking to play at a higher level nand developing their skills, confidence and body management/conditioning.

Achievements as a Player:

Played in the NSW School Boys team.

Won NSW Youth League with Sydney Comets two years in a row and Co-captaining the side during the 2nd year.  

Won Odd Age State Championships. 

Started as bottom age NSW under 18’s.

2004 - Trained with Australian School Boys team

Represented Australia in 2 x International vs the Philippines.

Played for Taranaki Mountaineers in NZBL.

Played for Auckland stars  in NZBL.

Won ABA (now known as NBL 1) Title with Wildcats and

Played 7 years of ABA (Waratah League)

Played for Ipswich force in QBL

Qualifications:

Bachelors of Journalism (Majoring in Media). Diploma of Business Advertising. 

Currently holds valid and up to date certification as below:

First Aid and CPR Certification

Coach Doc

Coach Doc is well known across Sydney for his passion, common sense and fundamental approach to coaching and the game. Having coached players across all skill and experience levels from beginners up to professional players- he has shown great success developing, mentoring and contributing to the growth and positive achievements of thousands of kids, collegiate and professional athletes across Sydney.

Doc is currently working daily as a professional individual skills and development Coach working mainly with the youth of Inner West of Sydney.


Coach Doc is currently the Head Coach of U12 Marrickville Spirit Representative Team and in July 2023 finished the season 4-0 in pre-season, 15-0 in regular season and won the Division Championship with a talented and special group of young players.

Most recently in 2024 Coach led the Marrickville Spirit Boys U12 Representative Team to Metro and State Cup Championship for NSW going undefeated in State Cup Championship and showing great heart from a talented group.

Coach Doc is currently Head Skills Coach for Marrickville Spirit Skills Development Program.

Qualifications:

Diploma of Sport & Recreation Management. 

Currently holds valid and up to date certification as below:

First Aid and CPR.
